The region is currently marked by crises and conflicts, and has been overshadowed by the war in Gaza since October 2023. The impact on citizens and the societies, politics, economy and environment in which they live is far-reaching. Reporting on these issues presents journalists with numerous challenges, including threats to physical and mental health, limited financial resources and political pressure.
These challenges are particularly pronounced for female journalists, as they face increased discrimination due to their gender. Despite these obstacles, many female journalists are at the forefront of reporting on conflicts and crises, challenging stereotypes and overcoming difficulties. This year’s awards will therefore focus on recognising reporting by women and reporting on women affected by conflict and crisis. Furthermore, young people are also severly affected by the current crisis – addressing their concerns and giving them a voice will also be recognised.
In addition to highlighting women, young people and the work of female journalists, this year’s award will also focus on the best reporting on the environment and climate change, with an emphasis on the link to conflict, corruption and governance. Climate change is just one example of a topic that has regional relevance. Complex regional challenges will need to be reported regionally: A prize will also be awarded for cross-border reporting on topics and issues of regional relevance.
To recognise and honour the journalists from Iraq, Palestine, Jordan and Lebanon who are courageously reporting on these vital issues, we are pleased to announce the 2024 Qarib Journalism Prize. We look forward to your participation!
