QaribTalk#10 – A new Middle East on the ruins of the Axis of “resistance”?
One year after the 7th of October 2023, the war has not only continued but has spilled over into Lebanon, where the Israeli army has launched a series of attacks on southern Lebanon, the Bekaa Valley in eastern Lebanon and the southern suburbs of Beirut. This has resulted in the displacement of one million and 300,000 citizens, or 20 percent of the population, and at least 2,019 deaths and 119,000 injuries.
Israel has dealt a severe blow to Hezbollah, raising questions about its future as a major military force. It has also raised questions about the party’s future as a dominant force on the Lebanese scene as well as its role as a military force in Syria, and how it will impact Iranian-allied groups in Yemen and Iraq. This comes at a time when the war in Gaza continues, with more than 40,000 Palestinians and 1,200 Israelis killed, and more than 100 Israeli hostages still being held in Gaza. There have also been numerous Israeli raids in the West Bank, and Israel has been hit twice by ballistic missiles from Iran.
As the conflict drags on, the question at this moment is how Israel can strike Iran without triggering a new wave of ballistic missile attacks – or worse. The main conflict parties are framing their actions through grand slogans. While the Iranian-backed “axis of resistance” declares to seek liberating Palestine, Israel reiterates defending its right to exist against those who seek to eliminate it, justifying its wars on all fronts. Meanwhile, there seems to be no serious initiative to stop this war and prevent its further escalation, and all that is being promoted are temporary ceasefires that are unlikely to materialize anytime soon.
This Sunday, October 13 at 12h (UTC+2 (Jerusalem); 11h CET), we will discuss these developments in our QaribTalk#10 with analysts from the region:
How will this war affect Iran’s allies and their future role in the region? Regarding Israel and Palestine, is the two-state solution still a viable option in light of the developments and realities in Gaza and the Westbank? How will the heavy blows suffered by Hezbollah affect its future as an armed militia and political party? Has the confrontation between Israel and Iran reached a point of no return? What avenues can the United States and the West pursue to prevent this confrontation?
